Clavioline

Early tube based electronic keyboard made in France around 1953. Sold by Gibson in the US. This one possibly took a tumble several years ago, denting the front, which forced a few of the keys down for a long time. I was able to get the keys working again, and did a little modification to help those keys’ weakened springs. I also banged out the dent, cleaned all of the contacts and switches, replaced the felts, and replaced all of the electrolytic capacitors. Before, it was really quiet and only audible with the knee lever set to max with lots of 60Hz hum. The amplifier cabinet is part of the Clavioline system and connects to the keys using a multipin umbilical cord. The keyboard and tripod stand fit neatly into the back of the amp for transport. It can also be mounted under a piano keyboard for access to an entire orchestra at your command! The Clavioline was used in 1962 on the Tornado’s song “Telstar” and a modified version was used on the solo of “My Little Runaway” by Del Shannon the year before that.

This particular Clavioline was purchased years ago from an old music shop in Durham, NC for a well known studio. It probably lived in that shop for decades before anyone bought it.
